About Beer

Beer (German: Bier, Spanish: Cerveza, French: Bière) is an alcoholic beverage made by starch hydrolysis with fermentation.

Beer is one of the oldest and most popular beverages in the world, its total consumption is only less than water and tea. Based on the planting patterns in Mesopotamia and of the early residents of Fertile Crescent, certain form of beer had been brewing since the ninth century BC.

The earliest evidence was a residue found on the pottery plate unearthed from the Jiahu site in Henan Province, China, in the seventh millennium BC. Because grain remains in at the bottom of ancient beer, the characters in the Mesopotamian murals used reed pipes to drink beer from the urn.

Numerous ancient documents have also mentioned beer production and distribution. For example, "Code of Hammurabi” from 1754 BC mentioned the laws for beer and pubs, and "Hymn to Ninkasi” from 1800 BC, a poem that praise to the goddess of beer.

The bitter taste that you get from drinking beer comes from hop, which also works as preservative. Some brewers add vanilla or fruit to cover up the bitter taste for those who do not like bitterness.

Fun fact:
The crown cap used for beer glass bottles was first invented by the British inventor William Painter at the end of the 19th century. There were 24 serrations around it. However, it was later found to be causing excessive tightness, so the number of serrations was unified to the current 21 tooth specification.
